Alma & BluJay Hawk
Alma and BluJay (BJ) met in college. During their sophomore year, they co-founded Stephens’ first LGBT organization. BJ was worried they were too young to settle down, but Alma convinced her otherwise. When San Francisco began marrying same-sex couples, they rushed to City Hall and were happily wed on February 20, 2004. Even though they already considered each other spouses, that little piece of paper brought more validation to their union than they could have imagined.

Joel & Steve Connor
Joel and Steve, two middle-aged mid-westerners, joke they had to move all the way to the west coast to meet the boy next door. They were together six years when Steve suggested they go to Oregon to get married. After Joel picked his jaw up off the floor, he quickly agreed. On April 19, 2004, Joel and Steve flew to Portland and got married before a judge. Joel considered getting married in Portland an elopement and wanted to celebrate with family and friends. So, they began planning the wedding they thought they’d never have.

Adam & Sharon Purkiss
Still single in her mid-thirties, Sharon had dated several nice men who technically had everything she was looking for in a partner. But after discussing all their qualities with her friends, she admitted something just didn’t feel right. An on-line search led her to Adam, and for the first time, she didn’t care to ask anyone’s opinion, she knew he was the one. Having been married once before, Adam acknowledges the importance as he put it, “to create something. To have more because of your union.” Adam and Sharon felt deeply committed during their engagement, but they too experienced a sense of validation of their relationship in the eyes of friends and family when they were married on June 5, 2004.
